Preventing Abuse

Course Description

Preventing abuse in aged care is critically important because older people are often vulnerable due to physical, cognitive, or social limitations, and rely on staff for their safety, wellbeing, and dignity. Abuse, whether physical, emotional, financial, sexual, or through neglect, can have devastating and long-lasting effects on a resident’s physical health, mental wellbeing, and quality of life. It also erodes trust between residents, families, and care providers, undermining the very purpose of aged care services.

Ensuring abuse is prevented is not only an ethical responsibility but also a legal and regulatory requirement. A safe, respectful, and supportive care environment protects residents, promotes person-centred care, and upholds their rights. Preventing abuse also contributes to a positive workplace culture, where staff feel accountable, valued, and empowered to act when concerns arise. By prioritising abuse prevention, aged care services maintain high-quality care standards, protect vulnerable individuals, and reinforce trust and confidence within the community.
